A tenugui hand towel created in conjunction with the exhibition "Behold the Rocket Ninja!!" by painter, calligrapher, and ceramic artist Kenichi Takanaka. The tenugui fabric, made from high-quality bleached cotton, features his drawings expressed using the *chusen dyeing technique. It is a truly unique creation that blends his singular artistic world into an everyday item.
*Chusen refers to a traditional method of stencil dyeing in which a special glue is used to resist dye in certain areas, and then dye is poured over the layered fabric to color the patterned sections.
【Kenichi Takanaka】Kenichi Takanaka was born in 1966 in Toride, Ibaraki Prefecture. After leaving Gakushuin University, he began creating calligraphy and paintings as a self-taught artist, drawing inspiration from Chinese classics, Buddhist scriptures, and Japanese literature. In 1993, he built his own wood-fired kiln in Otaki, Chiba Prefecture, and began his full-scale work in ceramics. His creations, produced while living a semi-self-sufficient lifestyle, have drawn attention for their distinctive sensibility and unique expression, leading to numerous solo exhibitions at various galleries. A&S has been offering his works since 2016.
Caution
*Depending on the color of the dye, there may be variations in tone when dyeing a large surface. Some dye bleeding and smudging may also occur. These qualities add to the handcrafted appeal.
*The adhesive used in the dyeing process may not be entirely removed during finishing. Washing will eliminate the residue, allowing the item to be used without issue.
Care instructions
*A generous amount of dye is used in the resist-dyed tenugui to form the patterns. When first used, excess dye may wash out, but this will stabilize after two or three washes. The color will gradually fade with time, but continued use will enhance the texture.
*When laundering with light-colored items, there is a possibility of color transfer. Please handle with care.
*Please avoid tumbler drying.
