Yaser Shaw's pashmina* shawls are hand-spun, hand-woven and hand-embroidered. The shawls are made by and help preserve the traditional techniques of Kashmir, India, and weaving them with a modern, contemporary expression. The process of weaving the shawls produces deep tones, giving the an elegant texture and sophisticated aesthetic. The shawl is one of a kind, made with checked fabric and a delicate and beautiful, very fine hand embroidered grass floral pattern. The natural texture of the raw wool remains, giving it a unique softness, and the beautiful fall of the cloth when worn around the neck can only be achieved by hand weaving. This amazingly smooth and delicate feel is unique to Pashmina. Although the fabric is thin and delicate, it retains heat and can be worn and wrapped in a variety of ways. The entire production process is carried out by traditional manual labor, and the techniques are passed down from generation to generation. Some of the embroidery can taking up to nine months for a single craftsman to complete. All shawls are signed to indicate the embroidery and the artisan who wove the fabric.
*Pashmina is a fabric spun and hand-woven from the soft inner raw wool of the cashmere goat, which is found in the Himalayas from altitudes above 4000m. In the past, it was a rare commodity only available for the royalty and aristocrats. Even today, this yarn can only be spun by hand, because each strand of raw wool is so fine it rips apart when spun by a machine.
