Hakkodo for A&S
This medium-sized incense container by Hakkodo is a product of the Kamakura period (1185-1333), a time when Zen Buddhism and lacquer carving were introduced to Japan from China. An incense container is a type of tea ceremony utensil, a small container with a lid for storing incense. It is used to purify the spirit of those who gather in the tea room and to cleanse the room. A&S has specially ordered a matte finish on the inside, whereas the inside is usually finished with a glossy finish, for use not only as an incense container but also as an everyday small container. The lid and body are screwed together to make a snug fit for easy portability. The wood is made of Hokkaido katsura. The large, bold, and delicate carvings by craftsmen are given expression by applying lacquer, and as it is used more and more, the lacquer on the top coat wears off and the black lacquer on the middle coat becomes more visible, adding depth to its flavor.
The black (blade flower) is finished with tin maki, in which sword marks are carved from the center to all directions as if they were flowers. Azuki (blade mark) is a special order of A&S, which is one of the characteristics of Kamakura carving and not found in Hakkodo original. It has a tactile feeling that fits easily in your hand.
【Hakkodo】Owned and operated by the Goto family, Hakkodo has crafted traditional religious sculptures over generations, beginning with the production of Buddhist sculptures and later, during the Meiji era, Kamakura-bori sculptures. Hakkodo was highly praised for the artistic value of its pieces at the World Fair in Paris, and at the end of the 19th century, opened the store that is still in operation today in front of the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura. The Goto family continues to work in the original style, which has been handed down from one generation to the next into the modern age.
